Every Pride, Every Place, Every Story

Brooklyn Pride was established in 1996 by local residents seeking to create a platform that celebrated the borough’s diverse LGBTQ+ community. Prior to its inception, many LGBTQ+ Brooklynites would travel to Manhattan for such events. The inaugural Brooklyn Pride March took place on June 14, 1997, starting at J.J. Byrne Park in Park Slope, an area known for its vibrant lesbian community.

The organization behind the event, Brooklyn Pride, Inc., is a wholly volunteer-managed, tax-exempt, non-profit organization working for and on behalf of all LGBTQ+ Brooklynites and supporters. Their mission is to increase visibility, acceptance, and inclusion to ensure equality for the LGBTQ+ community, honoring the spirit of the Stonewall Riots.

Over the years, Brooklyn Pride has grown to become the largest and most prominent organization serving Brooklyn’s LGBTQ+ community. The annual celebration typically includes a week-long series of events, culminating in the Twilight Pride Parade and Multicultural Festival in Park Slope.
