All aboard! Chappell Roan has officially secured the UK number one spot with her sapphic breakup anthem “The Subway”.
The highly-anticipated single, which she has been performing live since 2024, finally dropped on Friday (1 August) alongside its music video. Within days, it soared to the top of the UK singles chart, cementing Roan’s place as one of the leading queer voices in pop today.
Describing the track, Chappell Roan told fans it “encompasses everything I love about New York City, with the hope, heartbreak and healing that it has to offer us all.”
A Second Chart-Topper for Chappell Roan
This marks Chappell Roan’s second UK number one, following “Pink Pony Club,” which reached the top in March — five years after its original release. Earlier this year, her country-tinged hit “The Giver” peaked at number two.
Sapphic Artists Dominate the Charts
It’s a big week for sapphic artists. Alongside Chappell Roan’s success, her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess has climbed to number 12 in the UK album charts, while Reneé Rapp’s BITE ME claims the number one album spot.
Chappell Roan on Album Two
Despite the success of “The Subway,” Chappell Roan has made it clear there’s no rush for a new album. Speaking to Vogue on Monday (4 August), she revealed:
“The second project doesn’t exist yet. There is no album. There is no collection of songs.”
It took her five years to write The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and she expects the follow-up to take just as long. “I don’t think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything,” she added.
Touring with Purpose
Chappell Roan also announced a pop-up tour this autumn in New York, Kansas City, and Los Angeles, with a portion of proceeds going to charities supporting trans youth.
